Apple poaches senior Meta lawyer to restructure legal team to address global litigation challenges

📅 2026-10-18

Abstract:

Apple recently recruited senior attorney Scott Tucker from Meta to lead the company's litigation practice. The appointment is an important part of the latest round of restructuring of Apple's legal department and reflects the company's efforts to strengthen its ability to face increasingly complex legal and regulatory challenges.

According to the disclosed information, Tucker will serve as Apple's newly created "vice president of global litigation and financial services" position, responsible for overseeing commercial litigation, patent disputes and various legal affairs involving Apple's financial products. Before joining Apple, Tucker was in charge of Meta's litigation business and held a senior legal position at Morgan Stanley. He has extensive experience in legal management of large enterprises.

The appointment also reunites Tucker with Apple general counsel Jennifer Newstead. Newsted joined Apple's senior management team in March this year, and before that, she served as chief legal officer at Meta for six years.

With the adjustment of the organizational structure, Heather Grenier, who is currently responsible for Apple's commercial litigation and competition litigation, will report directly to Tucker in the future and will no longer be directly responsible to Newstead. However, she will remain part of the management team led by Newstead. At the same time, Apple also expanded the scope of responsibilities of legal executive Kyle Andeer to include international legal affairs, child safety, cybersecurity, and law enforcement cooperation.

This personnel adjustment is part of a larger reform of the legal system led by Newsted. Currently, she has been responsible for both Apple's legal affairs and government affairs departments. Previously, Apple announced that it would integrate the two divisions and promote organizational restructuring with the retirement arrangements of two long-term executives, Kate Adams and Lisa Jackson.

According to reports, some executives within Apple believe that the company’s performance in many important legal battles in recent years has not met expectations, especially in disputes related to the App Store. The years-long lawsuit between Apple and Fortnite developer Epic Games has forced Apple to adjust its rules governing external payment links and change the way some app stores charge.

In addition to the App Store dispute, Apple is currently facing antitrust lawsuits initiated by the U.S. government and multiple privacy-related cases. At the same time, the company also previously agreed to a $250 million settlement agreement regarding the delay of Siri's artificial intelligence functions, which is expected to hold a final approval hearing in February 2027.

Analysts believe that in the context of increasing regulatory scrutiny and rising legal risks in the technology industry, Apple's introduction of senior legal executives with Meta and Wall Street backgrounds shows that the company hopes to more actively respond to future global legal challenges by strengthening litigation and compliance capabilities.
