Abstract:
According to a notification recently announced by the European Commission, Apple acquired Sonera, a California-based start-up earlier this year. However, neither Apple nor Sonera disclosed the specific amount and other terms of the transaction.

Sonera previously focused on developing new biomagnetic sensing technologies. The company has said its technology can non-invasively measure magnetic fields generated by the brain and body and analyze neural data without the need for direct contact with skin. Compared with traditional electrical signal detection solutions that rely on electrode contact, this method is expected to bring more flexible wearable applications.
Sonera stated in information released in 2023 that its proprietary technology aims to make the measurement of brain activity as convenient as the detection of physiological indicators such as heart rate and body temperature. The company also believes this technology could lead to a new class of consumer wearable devices and interactive experiences designed around muscle activity.
Specifically, Sonera has developed a biomagnetic chip that can be used for more advanced prosthetic limb control, continuous monitoring of neuromuscular diseases, disease biomarker discovery, and sports performance tracking.
From a technical perspective, this acquisition may provide new underlying capabilities for Apple’s future health monitoring and accessibility features. The market expects that if the relevant technology is eventually commercialized, it may be used to expand the ability of Apple Watch and other devices to sense nerves, muscle activities and other physiological signals. However, Apple has not yet announced specific product plans.
