Apple's new CEO John Ternus has just taken office a month ago and is considering adjusting the company's product development and operations methods. On the one hand, he hopes to use his engineering background to promote faster product development and release new products throughout the year, rather than focusing mainly on the autumn iPhone launch and spring launch events; on the other hand, he also plans to control costs, reduce some product projects, and conduct small-scale layoffs in large teams.
At present, Apple usually launches new products through fixed autumn and spring release events. Ternus hopes to increase the frequency of releases and change this long-standing working model. However, employees interviewed believe that this entrenched development process is difficult to change quickly, and adjustments may take years.
In terms of cost control, Apple has recently laid off some Vision Pro development team employees. New reports indicate that employees within the company are expecting wider job cuts and project cancellations in the future; these changes are believed to be related to Ternus' plan to cut expenses and focus resources on developing fewer products. However, it is not yet clear when the layoffs will occur, or even whether the relevant plans will be finally implemented.
Apple had previously considered laying off about 5,000 AppleCare customer service staff on the grounds that artificial intelligence might take over some of the work, but Turnus has halted this plan. Employees' concerns about future layoffs stem more from changes in budget arrangements: some Apple departments originally expected budgets and preparations to increase in 2027, but now these growth plans will no longer be advanced.
Overall, Ternus's adjustment direction is not to simply add or reduce new products, but to try to reorganize product development with a more frequent release rhythm, while reducing the number of projects, controlling expenses, and reallocating manpower and budget. Relevant changes involve Apple’s long-term development process and team configuration, and the specific implementation scope and time have not yet been determined.
