The Trump administration officially launched the new government website America.gov on September 29, local time, with artificial intelligence as a core function, trying to allow the American people to obtain information and services scattered on various federal agency websites through a unified digital portal. The website, led by the National Design Studio, is positioned by the government as the federal government’s “digital front door” to the public.
The main goal of America.gov is to solve the long-standing problem of the U.S. government that various services are scattered on different agency websites, the operating procedures are complex, and it is difficult for users to determine which department they should go to for business. Users can directly use natural language to describe their needs, and then artificial intelligence will help find relevant government information and services without having to first understand the specific federal agency responsible for the business.
Trump said at the launch event that day that the American people will be able to make demands through a unified portal in the future, instead of having to search back and forth among a large number of government websites. For example, he said that in the future, users can use America.gov to apply for or start passport business, inquire about or handle Medicare-related matters, check the status of federal student loans, book federal camps and other services.
Joe Gebbia, chief design officer of the United States and co-founder of Airbnb, is responsible for promoting this project. He said that America.gov's long-term goal is to become a unified portal for Americans to deal with federal government affairs, so that users only need to tell the website what they want to accomplish, without knowing which government agency is responsible for this service.
The currently launched version is still a first-stage product, and some services have not yet been fully integrated. Before the official launch of the website, the U.S. government has discussed integrating more practical operations into America.gov, including passport applications and renewals, and allowing some taxpayers to complete federal income tax returns directly through the government website for free. The Trump administration had previously canceled the Direct File free tax filing project launched during the Biden administration, and similar functions once reappeared in America.gov's plans. However, the specific services that will be eventually included still depend on subsequent construction and integration between government departments.
The launch of America.gov also echoes the Trump administration’s plans in recent years to expand the use of artificial intelligence in the federal government. The government hopes to use AI to reduce the complexity of administrative services and at the same time promote the application of artificial intelligence in medical, energy, aerospace, agriculture and other fields.
