According to TechCrunch, OpenAI has suspended new user subscriptions for the $200 monthly Pro package to relieve infrastructure pressure due to higher-than-expected demand for the new Astra model.
OpenAI product lead Tibo Sotio said that the Pro package puts the greatest pressure on the system, so the company has temporarily closed the registration entrance for this package. This is the smallest scope adjustment OpenAI has taken to maintain wider user access. Existing Pro users will not be affected for the time being, and the API and lower-priced Go and Plus packages can still be used normally.
Sotdio had previously warned that the demand for Astra was "unprecedented." OpenAI is mobilizing more resources to maintain services and will prioritize ensuring the experience of existing users. If demand continues to grow, the company may pause accepting new Pro users.
Currently, OpenAI has not stated when subscriptions to the Pro package will resume, nor has it disclosed the number of new users added daily, so the outside world is temporarily unable to judge the specific scale of this increase in demand. TechCrunch pointed out that OpenAI just increased the usage limit for Codex users last month, and the current infrastructure pressure may mainly come from the increase in demand after the release of Astra.
Astra was released on September 3 and is gradually opening to Pro, Plus, Enterprise and Business users. OpenAI said that this model has achieved significant improvements in reasoning, programming, and computer operations, and called it the beginning of the "AGI era."
