Nintendo Switch 2 is successfully cracked for the first time, the first jailbreak solution opens the door to homemade software and game mods

📅 2026-10-22

Abstract:

More than a year after the release of Nintendo's new generation game console Switch 2, the security protection system was breached by researchers for the first time. Following the discovery of a common vulnerability a few months ago, developers recently announced the first jailbreak solution for Switch 2, which allows users to run homebrew software, modify game content, and execute custom code on the current system version. This also marks that Switch 2 has officially entered the era of cracking and mod development.

This crack is a "bind-type jailbreak" implemented purely through software. Unlike the permanent cracking solution, the user needs to use a specific first-generation Switch game to re-trigger the vulnerability every time he restarts the console, so the cracked status cannot be retained for a long time.

According to information presented by the developer, this vulnerability allows Switch 2 to run arbitrary native code on the latest firmware version. After obtaining permission, users can run home-made applications, install mods for Switch 2 games, back up game saves, and access most of the console's hardware peripheral functions. In order to demonstrate the cracking results, the developers also modified "Mario Kart World" to add characters such as Peter Griffin and Hatsune Miku into the game and successfully ran it.

It is generally believed in the industry that it usually takes several years for game consoles to develop critical vulnerabilities that enable a complete jailbreak. Therefore, the emergence of practical cracking solutions for Switch 2 shortly after its launch attracted widespread attention. It is worth noting that the developers revealed that they used artificial intelligence tools such as OpenAI’s Codex to assist in analysis during the vulnerability research and crack development process.

From a technical perspective, the researchers first targeted an original Switch game with backward compatibility and exploited a 32-bit integer overflow vulnerability in the software to gain initial code execution permissions. Subsequently, by adjusting process permissions and hijacking the system loading process, native code execution on Switch 2 was finally achieved. For security and legal reasons, the relevant technical details have not been publicly disclosed.

The media Wccftech stated that it had watched the video showing the cracking results and checked the relevant code warehouse, confirming that the crack was not a forgery. However, now that developers have identified the games required to trigger the vulnerability, Nintendo is expected to take action soon, including removing the relevant software from the eShop store and fixing the vulnerability through subsequent system updates.

Despite this, this breakthrough is still regarded as an important milestone in the development of the Switch 2 ecosystem. As the door to cracking opens, community activity around game mods, home-made applications, and console hardware research is expected to grow rapidly in the future. Considering the PC platform’s long-standing active mod culture, Switch 2 games may have richer player-customized content in the future. At the same time, the developer community also has the opportunity to further study the internal technical details of the host, such as its NVIDIA DLSS implementation mechanism and other previously less public information.
