ChatGPT upgrades image capabilities to support direct generation and editing of GIF animations

📅 2026-11-05

Abstract:

OpenAI announced the launch of a new GIF animation generation function for ChatGPT. Users can now directly create playable GIF animations by simply entering text prompts or uploading an image. This new capability will be open to users along with the new Images 2.6 image model, further expanding the capabilities of ChatGPT in the field of image creation.

According to OpenAI, the upgraded ChatGPT can not only generate GIF animations, but also allows users to subsequently edit the animations, including adjusting the playback speed, modifying the content of individual frames, and sharing the finished product with others. Previously, although ChatGPT could generate static images, if users wanted to make a GIF, they often needed to use multiple steps or third-party tools to complete it, and could not directly generate a complete animation in one conversation.

In the example shown by OpenAI, after the user inputs "Can you make a GIF animation of a dancing cat?", ChatGPT will directly generate the corresponding animation content. At the same time, the system will also provide playback speed control options and a frame-by-frame viewing mode, so users can modify specific frames without regenerating the entire animation.

In addition to the GIF function, the Images 2.6 model also improves image generation efficiency. OpenAI said that the new model can further shorten the image generation time and allow users to get the content they need faster. At the same time, the company continues to optimize the quality of image generation to enhance the overall creative experience. The latest data disclosed by OpenAI shows that the number of images generated by users every week through ChatGPT and related APIs has exceeded 4 billion. Compared with the 3 billion images per week announced in September this year, this number has increased significantly, reflecting the rapid expansion of demand for AI image creation.

In terms of developer ecology, OpenAI simultaneously launched two new image API models. Among them, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare focuses on generation speed and is suitable for scenarios that require fast output of content; GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst puts more emphasis on generation quality and is oriented to applications that require higher picture details and visual effects.

OpenAI stated that Images 2.6 and GIF generation functions will be launched to all ChatGPT and Codex users, covering web pages, desktop clients and mobile application platforms. This means users can directly experience new dynamic image creation capabilities, regardless of device.

Industry analysts believe that although GIF is a long-established online media format, it is still widely used in social media, instant messaging, product display and online emoticon culture. As ChatGPT can natively generate and edit GIF animations, users can quickly create personalized dynamic image content without mastering professional animation software.

This update also marks that OpenAI is continuing to promote its integrated creation platform strategy from text generation, image creation to dynamic image production. Against the background of the growing demand for AI content production, ChatGPT is gradually evolving into a comprehensive creative tool that integrates text, picture and animation creation.
