OpenAI will retire the old ChatGPT Classic app and merge chat and work tabs

📅 2026-11-03

Abstract:

According to technology website 9to5mac, OpenAI has notified users who are still using the old version of the ChatGPT Classic application that the application will soon be discontinued. At the same time, OpenAI is also preparing to merge Chat and Work into a unified interface.

A few months ago, OpenAI released a new ChatGPT desktop application, integrating ChatGPT chat, Work and Codex into the same interface. Therefore, the original regular ChatGPT application was renamed ChatGPT Classic. This adjustment has caused a lot of controversy, mainly for two reasons: First, OpenAI replaced the native macOS application with a version developed based on the Electron framework; second, the new interface design is very confusing. Not only is it difficult for users to find regular ChatGPT conversations, it is even difficult to distinguish the differences between ChatGPT, Work, and Codex.

OpenAI quickly responded to some complaints, restoring the prominent Chat and Work switch button at the top of the window, allowing users to directly access the conversation, and adding a sidebar menu for switching between ChatGPT and Codex. The company has since rolled out other changes to make the app easier to use.

However, the ChatGPT Classic application remains basically unchanged. As OpenAI releases new models that are more closely integrated with new application-specific features, such as the ability to select different inference strengths, it becomes increasingly unreliable. Although there have been various signs that this app is about to be discontinued, now the official has finally given a specific date. According to the new prompt message users see when opening ChatGPT Classic, the application will officially stop providing services on January 30, 2027.

"This application will officially cease service on January 30, 2027. Please use the new version of the ChatGPT application to experience the latest features. All your chat records will be migrated, and you can continue unfinished conversations." OpenAI said.

OpenAI is informing users that it will begin testing a unified experience that integrates Chat and Work functions in the next few weeks. A few months ago, OpenAI president Greg Brockman admitted that the new ChatGPT interface was "definitely a little confusing." He said at the time that the company hoped to remove the Work tab and integrate its functionality into the regular ChatGPT experience by the end of the year.

Now, OpenAI explains in an email to users that the test will be available to a small group of users at first. They will be able to use ChatGPT’s conversational features as well as Work’s more powerful advanced features in the same interface.
