OpenAI announced that some functions of ChatGPT will share quota with Codex

📅 2026-11-01

Abstract:

On October 31, OpenAI announced that starting from December this year, the usage quota of ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Business packages will be shared between ChatGPT and Codex and will no longer be calculated separately. This adjustment is related to OpenAI integrating Work's agent capabilities into the main interactive interface of ChatGPT, with the purpose of allowing users to complete more complex tasks directly in ChatGPT.

According to the announcement, the shared quota is measured in Tokens. The actual consumption rate depends on the model selected by the user and the complexity of the task. Models with stronger capabilities and more complex tasks will consume more quota. Instant chat does not occupy this shared quota, and users' daily use of instant mode chat will not be affected. For paying users who use ChatGPT and Codex at the same time, the quotas of the two services will affect each other. If one consumes more, the available quota of the other will be reduced accordingly.

OpenAI stated that it is fully preparing for this transition and expects that most users will wait for their quota to be reset no more frequently than before. Users can then view the remaining combined quota and the next reset time on the ChatGPT "Settings - Usage" page; after the quota is exhausted, they can choose to wait for automatic reset, upgrade the subscription plan, or purchase points to continue using it.
