Abstract:
A Reddit netizen posted recently that he spent 100,000 Indian rupees (approximately 8,000 yuan) on Amazon to buy Samsung’s 8TB 9100 Pro flagship SSD. The actual measured result was only about 128GB, and the internal hardware was an off-brand storage device from the cheap brand EVM.
According to the netizen's description, the order was placed on September 20 and received on September 26. He was not suspicious when he received the product: although the packaging had some bumps and damage, there was no obvious abnormality overall, and the appearance of the SSD itself was made to look like the Samsung 9100 Pro.
However, after installing it into the computer, the capacity recognized by the system was only about 128GB. Further hardware inspection showed that the disk used was not Samsung hardware at all, but an ordinary EVM brand storage device.
For comparison, Samsung's official data shows that the real 9100 Pro is a PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 product, using Samsung's self-developed main control and V-NAND TLC flash memory. The 8TB version has a nominal sequential read of up to 14.8GB/s and a sequential write of up to 13.4GB/s. It is equipped with an 8GB LPDDR4X cache, and provides a 4800TBW write life and a 5-year limited warranty.
Many netizens in the comment area quickly pointed out the flaws of the fake disk: the heat dissipation sticker is obviously too thin, the main control size is wrong, and there are still many flash memory particles that should be missing on the PCB. Some users of the real 8TB 9100 Pro even directly asserted that it is definitely a fake.
The netizen also said that he had never encountered a fake SSD of this level. In addition, the price paid this time was not low, about 100,000 Indian rupees (about 8,000 yuan), which was not so cheap that it was obviously abnormal, so he did not consider fakes.
The netizen is currently negotiating with the Amazon platform for a refund, but because the order is marked as non-returnable, the process is not going smoothly.
