Nvidia’s new generation DLSS 5 technology, which has not yet been officially released, has recently been successfully cracked by private developers. The DLSS 5 core neural rendering function, which was originally exclusive to the RTX 50 series Blackwell architecture, can now run normally on the RTX 40 series graphics cards.

According to Nvidia's official restrictions, this core function is only suitable for RTX 50 series Blackwell architecture graphics cards, and the previous generation Ada Lovelace architecture RTX 40 series is not suitable for it.

But

Uncle Burrito, a well-known mod developer in the RenoDX Discord community, completely broke this device lock through reverse engineering and achieved functional compatibility between the two generations of graphics cards.

According to Uncle Burrito, the core of DLSS 5 does not completely rely on the exclusive hardware of the RTX 50 series. Its calculation logic is mainly based on FP8 floating point operations. In terms of graphics card hardware, the fourth-generation Tensor Core that comes standard with all RTX 40 series natively supports FP8, so there is no shortcoming in physical performance.

The real cause of functional castration is that the dll file contains exclusive CUDA binary instructions that can only be recognized by the Blackwell architecture, deliberately blocking the calling permission of Ada architecture devices.

This cracking process is the same as the operation idea used by early players to unlock the DLSS 3 frame-filling function of the RTX 20/30 series. The developers accurately located the code segments in the library files that were incompatible with the Ada architecture, and created exclusive patches by manually replacing and completing the adaptation instructions, and finally realized the function transplantation.

At present, flagship models such as RTX 4080 Super have been successfully tested. Patches can be injected through ReShade and RenoDX tools to force the DLSS 5 neural rendering mode to be turned on in 3A masterpieces such as "Control".

Judging from the measured pictures and stability performance, the RTX 4080 Super after unlocking DLSS 5 runs stably, without problems such as large-area texture confusion, screen tearing, program crashes or system crashes.

It should be noted that the currently leaked DLSS 5 files are still early development versions, and the measured image quality and performance of the RTX 40 series do not represent the final official version.
