A hardware theft from an independent developer's booth occurred during the 2026 Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. The organizers of the exhibition recently issued another statement, acknowledging that criticism of its initial response was well-founded, and promised to carry out special security reviews for independent exhibitors.
Many developers and publishers have previously reported that equipment in their booths was stolen during the exhibition, including laptops, a Steam Deck and other hardware. The organizer of the exhibition has previously confirmed that the relevant incident has been reported to the police and the investigation is ongoing.
In the latest statement, the organizer of Gamescom admitted that it mishandled the initial communication and handling of the hardware theft incident. The organizers said: "These criticisms are justified. Our first response was inappropriate in tone and failed to show due empathy to those affected. We deeply apologize for this."
The organizers also admitted that the impact of the theft far exceeds the economic value of the equipment itself, especially for small studios, where months or even years of hard work are behind these work results and development equipment.
Gamescom stated that it has communicated with the affected exhibitors regarding the theft and its consequences. The organizer also expressed praise for those in the game industry who immediately extended a helping hand to the affected developers after the incident was exposed.
As part of the rectification measures, the organizer said that in addition to the regular post-exhibition review and exhibitor feedback assessment, a special security review will be carried out specifically for independent exhibitors. In the coming weeks, organizers will also invite leaders of independent joint booths to participate in roundtable meetings to discuss specific measures to improve security.
Gamescom also calls on all exhibitors who experience theft to report the incident to the organizer and the police, regardless of the time of the incident. Organizers say this will help to completely record the case and facilitate investigators to check whether there are connections between multiple incidents.
