Abstract:
GlobalFoundries, an American foundry company, announced that it will build and operate two new semiconductor manufacturing plants in New York State to expand domestic chip production capabilities in the United States and meet the growing demand in the fields of automobiles, industrial control, aerospace, defense, and artificial intelligence.

According to published information, the new factory will be located near the existing chip manufacturing park in Malta, New York. This project is an important part of GlobalFoundries' long-term production expansion plan, aiming to enhance the supply capacity of key mature processes and specialty process chips, and enhance the resilience of the US semiconductor supply chain.
GlobalFoundries said that once completed, the new facility will further supplement the production capacity of its current manufacturing base operating in New York and create synergies with the company's other factories in the United States and around the world. The company believes that as the construction of artificial intelligence infrastructure accelerates, the popularity of electric vehicles and the demand for advanced communication equipment increase, the demand for reliable semiconductor supply in various industries is continuing to rise.

In recent years, the U.S. government has continued to promote the reshoring of local semiconductor manufacturing. With the implementation of incentives related to the "Chip and Science Act", many semiconductor companies including TSMC, Intel, Samsung Electronics, Micron and GlobalFoundries have successively announced the expansion of investment in the United States. GlobalFoundries' new project is also seen as part of the United States' strategy to enhance its independent supply capabilities of key chips.
GlobalFoundries' CEO said the company is working with customers, government departments and industry partners to ensure sufficient manufacturing capacity in the coming years. The new factory will not only meet the growth in customer demand, but also help reduce risks caused by fluctuations in the global supply chain.
It is understood that GlobalFoundries is already one of the largest professional wafer foundry companies in the United States. Unlike manufacturers that focus on competing with the most advanced processes, the company focuses on the deployment of specialty process fields such as radio frequency chips, power management chips, embedded memories, and automotive-grade chips. These products are widely used in smartphones, automotive electronics, communication equipment, and industrial systems.

Industry analysts believe that although the development of artificial intelligence has led to a surge in demand for advanced computing chips, mature process chips are still an indispensable component of automobiles, industrial equipment and consumer electronics products. The global chip shortages in the past few years have shown that the supply of such chips is also related to the stable operation of the entire manufacturing industry. Therefore, GlobalFoundries' continued expansion of production capacity is regarded as an important measure to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem.
With the two new factories now in operation, GlobalFoundries expects to create a large number of high-tech jobs and further solidify New York State's position as an important semiconductor manufacturing center in the United States. The specific investment scale, construction schedule and future production capacity planning of the project are expected to be further announced in subsequent stages.
