Google officially confirmed that ChromeOS will end updates and security support in mid-2034. This means that this operating system, which has been supporting the Chromebook ecosystem for a long time since its advent in 2011, has entered the countdown stage, and Google will gradually shift its focus to the new Googlebook OS platform in the future.
According to support documents released by Google for enterprise and education customers, ChromeOS will continue to receive updates and security patches until mid-2034. For Chromebook devices currently deployed in schools and enterprises, existing management functions and upgrade services will continue to operate normally during this period.
This news actually confirms the information disclosed in relevant judicial documents earlier this year. At that time, the outside world had learned that Google planned to phase out ChromeOS around 2034, and this was the first time that Google officially confirmed this timetable through official support documents.
However, this decision also brought about an important change.
In recent years, Google has promised that Chromebook products will receive up to ten years of software support. However, as ChromeOS will stop updating in 2034, some newer Chromebook devices will face a situation where the support cycle has not yet ended and the operating system has retired early.
In this regard, Google stated that for those qualified devices with a ten-year life cycle that extends beyond 2034, the company will provide a migration plan to Googlebook OS. Officials said that many newer Chromebook products will have the ability to directly upgrade to Googlebook OS, thereby continuing to receive software updates during the remaining support cycle.

The company only said that many of the latest Chromebooks are expected to be eligible for migration, and that details about supported models, upgrade methods, and the actual migration process will be announced in the future.

Google revealed that Googlebook device management functions specifically for the enterprise and education markets are expected to be launched in the second half of 2027.
