Google embroiled in open source code controversy, AI mobile automation project accused of using community work without full attribution

Google has recently been involved in controversy in the open source community over an artificial intelligence mobile automation tool. A startup company focusing on AI control technology for mobile devices publicly accused Google of using a large number of its open source project codes, prompt word designs, and test cases during the development of internal projects, but failed to retain the original author's signature information in accordance with the open source license requirements.

The accusation was made by mobile automation company Minitap. The company's co-founder and CEO Nicholas Dehandshovek said that Google used content from the Minitap open source project "mobile-use" in its mobile automation project called Artemis, and the relevant implementation details are highly consistent with the original project on multiple key modules.

It is understood that the mobile-use project allows artificial intelligence to control real Android devices through natural language instructions to complete operations, such as opening applications, sending messages, or performing complex tasks. Minitap believes that Google not only borrowed the overall idea, but also directly adopted its core implementation solutions for Android device connection, agent command design, and WhatsApp automated task processing.

According to Minitap, some code contents are even word-for-word consistent. At the same time, the information that originally recorded the author's identity in the project was allegedly removed through a forced commit operation in August this year, making the source of the code no longer obvious.

After the incident was exposed, Google modified the relevant code and added a statement to the project, indicating that the project contained source code developed by Minitap. Minitap believes that this addition actually indirectly proves that Google has admitted that the relevant code comes from its open source project, but failed to correctly fulfill its attribution obligations when it was initially used.

The core of the dispute is not whether the code can be used, but whether the open source license requirements are followed. The project in question is released under the Apache 2.0 license, which allows third parties to freely use, modify and redistribute the code, but is required to retain the copyright statement and clearly indicate the changes. Minitap believes that Google violated the license by failing to meet these basic obligations when it originally integrated the code.

In addition to code issues, there are also conflicts between the two parties regarding benchmark rankings. Minitap said that the company has always wanted to update its test results on the AndroidWorld rankings, but the relevant data has not been updated for a long time. At the same time, the Artemis project maintained by Google recently obtained new test results and ranked at the top of the rankings. This situation further intensified Minitap's doubts about the fairness of the project.

Dehandshovek also said that Minitap has undergone a large number of technical iterations since the release of the open source version. The system currently running by the company has adopted a new closed source architecture, which has significant changes compared with the initial public version. He believes that some of the design concepts used in the current Google project are actually about seven months behind Minitap's current product.

This incident has once again triggered discussions in the technology industry about the relationship between large technology companies and the open source community. As the development rate of artificial intelligence projects continues to accelerate, more and more companies rely on open source software and community efforts for innovation. However, open source does not mean that license requirements can be ignored. How to use community resources while respecting the rights of original authors is becoming an important issue that the industry continues to face.
