Google releases new generation weather forecast AI model WeatherNext 3

📅 2026-09-03

Abstract:

Scientists from Google DeepMind and Google Research have officially launched a new artificial intelligence model for weather prediction. The model provides clearer insights into the changing state of the atmosphere and predicts meteorological changes with higher frequency.

This new model, named WeatherNext 3, represents the latest progress in the profound changes in meteorology caused by deep learning technology. In recent years, weather forecasting is undergoing a historic transformation from traditional numerical simulations based on complex physical equations to an artificial intelligence-driven paradigm.

Compared with traditional physical models that consume a lot of supercomputer resources and computing time, the new generation model based on deep learning not only shows an exponential improvement in computing efficiency, but also shows significant advantages in prediction accuracy, spatial resolution, and grasp of sudden extreme weather and precipitation events.

Google stated that WeatherNext 3 will gradually integrate and connect to many of its core products and weather data ecosystem. With the full implementation of the new model, both daily rainfall probability, short-term precipitation trends, and the capture of sudden severe convective weather will receive substantial upgrades, allowing users to obtain more timely, more precise, and more reliable localized weather forecasts, and making "forgetting to bring an umbrella" completely a thing of the past when going out.
