Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s business landscape is extremely dependent on the continued expansion of the artificial intelligence industry. Nvidia, which he runs, is a global core hardware supplier that provides underlying computing power support for data centers and computer equipment that run most AI systems and services. Therefore, he naturally doesn't care about the view that "AI will corrode the brain and make children forget basic mathematics, and even he himself can't remember his mobile phone number and address."
In the latest interview with the New York Times, the reporter mentioned to Jen-Hsun Huang that a Chinese study concluded that AI tools can help children complete homework faster, but the study also shows that the skills that the homework is supposed to cultivate have not been truly mastered by the children, so their test and exam scores are declining rapidly. Huang Renxun agrees that many children using AI may have this problem of insufficient knowledge retention, but he is not worried about it.
"Now if you let your children try long division," Huang said, "the multiplication tables have almost been forgotten. Let alone taking square roots, I can't even think about it. Basic mathematics is being gradually forgotten. But is it important? I don't think it is important. It's not important at all."
When the reporter pointed out that there are always some skills that are indispensable, Huang Renxun agreed, but he questioned whether basic mathematics belongs to this type of skill, and also proposed that humans will "discover new core abilities." He later admitted that due to his long-term use of AI and other technology products, he could not even remember his home address and phone number.
“There are so many skills that don’t really matter,” Huang said.
"Let me confess something first: I really can't remember my home address. It's absolutely true... My wife Lori can testify. A few years ago, I went to a gas station to fill up, and the clerk asked me for my zip code. I panicked on the spot and didn't know my zip code. I also can't remember my phone number. I have forgotten all these things, but I can completely accept this situation."
Huang Renxun further stated that it is true that AI may cause people to lose some "fine thinking flexibility", but there is no need to worry. We all grow to be better “systems thinkers.”
I don’t know what this so-called “systems thinker” is, and Huang Renxun’s lengthy 230-word answer didn’t explain why. So I can only understand by myself: the so-called systems thinker is probably the kind of person who is completely helpless when his cell phone runs out of battery. Whenever he has to deal with people, he can't even tell his address and phone number. Not only do these people not know how to do basic mathematical operations, they may not even be able to explain clearly the derivation logic of "4 times 3 equals 12" calculated by the chatbot. I don't see the merits of such a future!
