Two Wing Loong UAVs assist rescue in Jilong, Tibet, providing 24-hour relay to ensure communications

Abstract:

According to CCTV news reports, due to the impact of cross-border mudslides, ground communications and power were disrupted in some areas of Gyirong County in Shigatse, Tibet. The Sichuan Provincial Emergency Management Department urgently dispatched Wing Loong emergency communication drones across regions to provide reinforcements to the disaster area.

The reinforcement drone took off in the evening of August 26 and arrived in the mission airspace at 2 a.m. on the 27th to carry out disaster survey and communication support.

At present, two Pterosaur drones are hovering alternately at an altitude of 8,000 meters, achieving 24-hour uninterrupted communication coverage in the mission area. Up to now, a total of 6,069 users have been connected, and more than 661 calls have been guaranteed.

The Wing Loong UAV is equipped with a satellite communication system, which can convert satellite signals into ground base station signals of the three major operators, and build an air communication hub when ground facilities are paralyzed.

The system can identify mobile phone numbers that have appeared in the disaster area, push emergency text messages in batches, help locate trapped people who may have survived, and provide important clues for search and rescue efforts.

Airborne high-definition camera equipment can penetrate gaps in the clouds and return high-definition real-life images of mudslides and building damage, along with precise longitude and latitude, for the national and Tibetan emergency command departments to assess the scope of the disaster and plan rescue routes.

The Wing Loong series UAVs were developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute of the Aviation Industry. They are domestically independently developed medium-low-altitude, long-endurance multi-purpose UAV platforms with large payloads, long endurance, and high-altitude adaptability. They are widely modified for civilian scenarios such as emergency communications, disaster reconnaissance, weather detection, and forest fire prevention. They have played an important role in many disasters before.

The emergency communication Wing Loong UAV performing this mission has a maximum take-off weight of more than 4 tons, a endurance of more than 20 hours, a practical ceiling of more than 9,000 meters, and can hover stably for a long time in high-altitude mountainous areas. The total load of satellite communication links, public network base stations, and photoelectric reconnaissance equipment can reach hundreds of kilograms. It is one of the main models of domestic large-scale emergency rescue UAVs.
