Abstract:
With only a few weeks left before the opening of Meta’s annual developer conference Connect 2026, a set of pictures purportedly from internal firmware files were accidentally exposed, giving the outside world a clearer first look at the design of a new generation head display codenamed “Project Phoenix”. This device, which has not yet been officially released, shows a completely different development direction from the Quest series and is considered an important attempt by Meta to find a new product form between smart glasses and traditional headsets.

The leaked image is said to be from the HorizonOS prescription lens firmware package. Exposure content shows that Project Phoenix adopts a slim frame design similar to glasses, and its size is significantly smaller than traditional all-in-one headsets such as Quest 3. The overall shape is closer to mixed reality glasses, but retains some of the functional features of the head-mounted display device, and is in a transitional form between smart glasses and a complete XR head-mounted display.
Judging from the leaked pictures, the device adopts an independent lens structure and supports the installation of prescription lenses. Unlike most current VR headsets, the new device does not have a thick face-wrapping structure, but is closer to the way ordinary glasses are worn. There are sensors on both sides and below the fuselage for environmental sensing, gesture recognition and other tracking functions.
Another feature that attracts attention is the design of the external computing module. The image shows a cable connected to the end of the left temple of the device, leading to an external device. Industry insiders generally believe that this cable connects the external battery and computing unit. By separating the processor and power supply system from the headset body, Meta can significantly reduce the weight of the device and achieve a thinner and lighter design.
Many industry media have previously reported that the weight of Project Phoenix is expected to be controlled within 110 grams, which is only about one-fifth of the weight of Quest 3. This means that the burden on the user’s head will be significantly reduced, thereby improving the long-term wearing experience.
Leaked information also shows that the device mainly relies on eye tracking and hand tracking to complete interactions. In the exposed guidance interface, there is no content related to traditional VR controllers, but the focus is on eye movement calibration and hand recognition processes. This means that Meta may want to build it into a mixed reality device with "controller-less operation" as its core concept.
In terms of display technology, Project Phoenix is currently widely expected to use a high-resolution Micro-OLED display and use Pancake folding optical lenses to further reduce the thickness of the device. However, Meta has not officially announced any hardware parameters, so the relevant specifications are still in the rumor stage.
Phoenix is not a recent project. News about the device have surfaced several times in the developer community and in the firmware code over the past few months. Previously, Meta technical head Andrew Bosworth confirmed that the company is developing multiple next-generation XR equipment projects, and Project Phoenix is considered one of the most important products.
Phoenix Project may reflect Meta’s new judgment on the future form of XR equipment. Although traditional VR headsets are powerful, their size and weight have always limited their popularity; while ordinary smart glasses, although lighter, are difficult to provide an immersive experience. Meta seems to be hoping to find a balance between the two through Project Phoenix and create a new category of devices that combine comfort and functionality.
Meta has not yet publicly responded to the leaked images. According to the plan, Meta Connect 2026 will be held from September 23 to 24. It is widely predicted that Meta is expected to officially display Project Phoenix during the conference and announce more about the design concept, hardware configuration and launch plan of this device.
If the final product is basically consistent with the leaked content, Project Phoenix will not only become Meta's thinnest and lightest mixed reality device ever, but it may also represent an important shift in the direction of XR hardware development.
