Microsoft advances Windows 11 26H2 public beta, installation media has started testing

📅 2026-08-28

Abstract:

Microsoft has pushed Windows 11 26H2 to the Windows Insider Release Preview Channel, which usually means that the version is only weeks away from being released to the public. At the current pace, the update is expected to officially roll out in the last week of September or early October.

Windows 11 26H2 is not a major feature upgrade, and strictly speaking it shouldn't even be considered a "feature update." Its core purpose is to reset Windows' support lifecycle: Support for Windows 11 25H2 will end in October 2027, while 26H2 is expected to extend support into 2028.

Microsoft does not currently expect users to immediately migrate to the next large version of Windows 11 27H2 in October 2027, so small version updates like 26H2 have become necessary to maintain the product support cycle. Windows 11 24H2 will end support for Home and Pro editions on October 13, 2026, and Enterprise and Education editions until October 12, 2027; the corresponding deadlines for 25H2 are October 12, 2027, and October 10, 2028, respectively. It is expected that support for 26H2 will continue until approximately October 2028 for the Home and Professional editions, and until approximately October 2029 for the Enterprise and Education editions.

The Release Preview Channel provides builds that are close to the final public release, so participants are generally unlikely to encounter significant issues after downloading 26H2. After the version enters the official channel for non-Insiders at the end of September or early October, users can also exit the release preview channel.

However, for ordinary users, joining the Windows Insider program specifically to experience 26H2 does not make much sense. Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2 basically belong to the same system. Both are built on the shared service branch introduced in Windows 11 24H2, and will also receive new features and improvements pushed by Microsoft's continuous innovation mechanism.

The most intuitive change in 26H2 is that the system internal version number is increased to 26300; for comparison, the version number of 25H2 is 26200 and 24H2 is 26100. For enterprise users, one of the more obvious adjustments is that Windows backup will be enabled by default.

Microsoft also said that Windows 11 26H2 will support "app-specific actions from the taskbar." This capability is expected to be tied to new smart agent capabilities, but will only be available to Microsoft 365 Enterprise customers and not for general consumers.

In addition, 26H2 will enable one-time functionality that has been gradually pushed in recent months, including file explorer improvements, new start menu, etc. However, the existence of these features is still not enough reason for ordinary users to join the Insider program.

Microsoft has not yet announced the exact launch date, but judging from past release patterns, 26H2 will most likely be available to the public in the last week of September or early October. A wider rollout may not begin until the end of this year or early 2027. Until then, this build will primarily be available to users who actively check for updates and manually choose to download and install them in Windows Update.

At the same time, Microsoft has also begun testing Windows 11 26H2 installation media, including media creation tools and ISO image files. Although 26H2 is a small "enabler package" update for existing computers, users can still perform a clean installation through traditional methods, and the related installation process will not change.
