Microsoft brings complete Office functionality to Copilot: Word, Excel and PowerPoint can be edited directly together

📅 2026-10-12

Abstract:

Microsoft is further strengthening the integration of Copilot and the Office ecosystem. Over the past few years, Microsoft has continued to introduce Copilot functionality into office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, allowing users to directly invoke artificial intelligence capabilities in documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Now, Microsoft has begun to adopt the opposite strategy, no longer just embedding Copilot into Office, but bringing the complete Office experience directly into the new Copilot application.

With this upgrade, users can create, edit, and collaborate on Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations without ever leaving Copilot. Copilot is gradually evolving from a simple AI assistant to a unified work platform capable of hosting complete office processes.

Previously, Microsoft announced a major reconstruction of Copilot and launched three core experiences: Home, Code and Autopilot. At that time, the company had already announced that it would integrate Office functions into Copilot, and now it has further disclosed how this function will be implemented.

In the new "Office in Copilot" experience, users can enter simple commands through Copilot Chat or initiate more complex tasks with Copilot Cowork. For example, users can ask Copilot to create a Word document based on research data. After the system generates the content, it will display the document directly next to the dialog window for continued modification and improvement.

Although the old version of Copilot also has the ability to create Office files, the biggest change in this upgrade is that users can continue to edit these contents directly within Copilot. Users can ask Copilot to rewrite specified paragraphs, supplement tables, or adjust the structure, or they can use traditional Office editing tools to modify the content themselves, achieving a seamless combination of manual editing and AI collaboration.

Microsoft says users will also be able to share files, add comments and collaborate with team members in real time directly within Copilot. Thanks to the full Office collaboration architecture, changes made by other participants are displayed simultaneously in real time. Currently, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files can be edited within the Copilot app.

At the same time, Microsoft has also added a new Library area to Copilot for unified management of recently used Office files, Copilot pages, and AI-generated image content. Users can quickly open existing files from here, or create new Office documents directly.

All Office files are still stored in OneDrive, so they retain their original formatting, annotation information, sharing permissions, and version history, ensuring consistency with existing Microsoft 365 workflows.

In terms of artificial intelligence models, users can still select specific models for Office tasks according to their own needs, or they can enable Copilot's Auto mode, and the system will automatically select the most appropriate model based on the current task type.

Microsoft said that this new Office integrated experience has now begun to gradually open to Frontier early access program users, and supports both Chat and Cowork work modes. With the implementation of this feature, Copilot will not only be a conversational AI assistant, but is expected to become an important entrance to Microsoft's future unified productivity platform.
