Abstract:
Elon Musk said that with its expertise in custom equipment manufacturing, he believes that his company has a high probability of "finding a better way to make chips than anyone else." Musk told a gathering of customers and investors outside Tesla's Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, that while he now has "no idea how to make microchips, we'll figure it out."
On Saturday, he participated in the "XTakeover" event via live broadcast. He mentioned that when he visited a competitor's factory, he found that they rarely used customized equipment, which is an area in which his company is very good, which allows them to improve the manufacturing process.
"I think it's accurate to say that this is one of the hardest things to do in the world," Musk said. "I don't want to be complacent or take it for granted, but I think there's a good chance we can figure out a better way to make chips than anyone else. Really. I don't know how long that's going to take, it could take years."
Musk is preparing to build a Terafab factory in Grimes County, Texas. The project is a joint venture between his Tesla and SpaceX companies and Intel, with an initial investment of more than $15 billion.
The project is expected to create 3,000 jobs and will receive a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant. The 100 million-square-foot facility will be built in phases on about 3,000 acres of land, of which SpaceX currently controls more than 13,000 acres.
