Nvidia invests US$3.5 billion in MediaTek and both parties work together to promote NVLink Fusion cooperation

Abstract:

Nvidia announced on August 31, local time, that it would invest US$3.5 billion in MediaTek and further deepen cooperation between the two parties in the chip field. NVIDIA and MediaTek have already cooperated before. MediaTek designed the GB10 system-level chip to power NVIDIA RTX Spark consumer products and DGX Spark mini workstations.

The two parties confirmed that they will promote cooperation around the NVIDIA NVLink Fusion ecosystem in the future. NVLink Fusion is a framework that combines intellectual property and core technology to make non-NVIDIA processors and accelerators an important part of the NVIDIA data center interconnection system.

MediaTek will provide the NVLink Fusion platform to customers. Its customers include many ASIC customers, including Google, who can connect their self-developed XPU to the NVLink Fusion extended interconnect network through optical interconnects or traditional copper interconnects. These include NVLink-C2C high-bandwidth interconnect technology, which can connect multiple XPUs adjacent to each other and will also be used in Nvidia's upcoming "Rosa" processors.

In addition, MediaTek will also provide customers with NVIDIA's latest NVHBM technology. This technology integrates the memory controller into the 3D HBM stack structure, thereby significantly improving performance and energy efficiency. NVIDIA said that compared with standard HBM4E, NVHBM's memory bandwidth can be increased by up to 30%, HBM power consumption can be reduced by 15%, and the chip die area available for calculation in the processing unit can be increased by up to 25%.

Another important significance of this cooperation is that customers can hand over the complete ASIC design and manufacturing process to MediaTek. MediaTek will use NVIDIA and NVLink related technologies to cover interconnection, memory architecture, packaging, manufacturing and rack-level technology to accelerate the development process of accelerator products.

The shorter design cycle will help customers complete prototype verification and promote mass production faster. Customers can also hand over their own XPU design to MediaTek and integrate it with NVLink Fusion technology.

At the same time, Nvidia has purchased US$3.5 billion in convertible bonds issued by MediaTek. If the share conversion is completed in the future, this investment may be converted into Nvidia's important equity in MediaTek.
