Abstract:
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he believes artificial intelligence companies can develop the technology safely without causing significant harm to the general public. "I'm very confident in our company's -- and the industry's -- ability to safely advance this technology," Altman said Tuesday at a meeting with Salesforce Inc. at the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco. CEO Marc Benioff said during the conversation.

Altman's comments on the speed of AI development come as policymakers and industry insiders debate whether government regulation is needed to prevent AI from escaping human control. Dario Amodei, CEO of OpenAI competitor Anthropic PBC, published an article on Saturday, raising the risks that AI technology may bring and arguing that the development speed needs to be slowed down, which triggered the latest round of discussion.
Although OpenAI is working with Anthropic and Alphabet Inc. Its subsidiary Google DeepMind cooperates to deal with security issues, but Altman said that AI companies should be able to improve AI models safely on their own.
"I'm disappointed in the way this has been portrayed," he said.
