Abstract:
The whistleblower "Digital Chat Station" recently stated on Weibo that Apple's planned iPhone 18e may use a 6.12-inch LTPS OLED screen, A20 chip and a single 48-megapixel rear camera, with a screen refresh rate of 60Hz. Regarding the front camera, the whistleblower is more uncertain, saying it may increase to 24 million pixels.
If the news is true, the A20 chip and front camera will be the clear potential upgrade directions for this entry-level model. The iPhone 17e released by Apple this year is equipped with an A19 chip, a 6.1-inch OLED screen, a 48-megapixel rear camera and a 12-megapixel TrueDepth front camera; therefore, the rumored 24-megapixel selfie camera will be doubled compared to the current model. However, the tipster did not explain whether the camera sensor or lens changed simultaneously.
The A20 is expected to use a 2-nanometer process. If true, it may bring performance and energy efficiency improvements compared to the 3-nanometer A19 used in the iPhone 17e. This process information comes from previous predictions of Apple's chip planning, and is not a specification clearly confirmed by this revelation. The report also pointed out that there are doubts about the 24-megapixel statement, and the whistleblower may have confused the specifications of Apple's new-generation front-facing camera; even if the front-facing camera is upgraded, the actual imaging performance cannot only be based on the number of pixels.
In terms of screen, it is reported that iPhone 18e will still use LTPS panel and 60Hz refresh rate, and will not add ProMotion high refresh rate. Its 6.12-inch screen is close to the approximately 6.1-inch display of the iPhone 16e and 17e; the rear camera is still a single-shot configuration, and there are no obvious rumors of hardware upgrades. It is said that higher refresh rate panels may not be released until the iPhone 19e in 2028 at the earliest, which is also just a rumor at present.
Apple has not yet announced the iPhone 18e, nor has it confirmed the above specifications. The machine is expected to be launched together with the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 in the spring of 2027. The specific release time is still to be officially announced by Apple.
