Abstract:
As the release date of Apple's new generation iPad mini approaches, the latest news from the Asian supply chain shows that this upcoming small-size tablet is expected to use OLED display technology for the first time, but the screen refresh rate may remain at 60Hz, rather than the 120Hz ProMotion high refresh rate solution expected by the outside world.

According to industry news, the upcoming iPad mini 8 will be equipped with an LTPS OLED panel with a refresh rate of 60Hz. There have been some market rumors that Apple may equip this product with a 120Hz display, but the latest news is that it has been confirmed that the mass-produced version will use 60Hz specifications.
This is not the first time similar statements have appeared. Earlier this year, supply chain-related news pointed out that Apple planned to use low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) backplane OLED panels on the new iPad mini. Although this solution can bring higher contrast, more vivid colors and pure black display effects, it does not have the variable refresh rate capability of LTPO panels.
Currently, Apple’s iPad Pro series uses more advanced dual-layer LTPO OLED display technology. The refresh rate can be dynamically adjusted between 10Hz and 120Hz to implement the ProMotion adaptive refresh rate function. LTPS OLED usually adopts a fixed refresh rate design, which has more advantages in cost and power consumption control, but the overall specification positioning is lower than that of the LTPO solution.
If the rumors are true, this decision may disappoint some users who are expecting a high refresh rate. Especially after Apple has gradually decentralized ProMotion technology to more products, many consumers originally expected that the first OLED version of iPad mini would have the opportunity to obtain 120Hz display capabilities at the same time.
However, judging from Apple's product layout in recent years, the company still tends to distinguish different grades of products through screen specifications. Even though OLED displays are expanding to more devices, high refresh rate technology is still one of the important selling points of Apple's high-end products. Therefore, retaining the 60Hz refresh rate helps maintain the market positioning difference between iPad Pro and iPad mini.
In addition to the OLED screen, the new iPad mini is also expected to receive a number of hardware upgrades. Existing news shows that the product is expected to be equipped with a more powerful A20 Pro chip, the front FaceTime camera may be adjusted to a position more suitable for horizontal use, the speaker system will be upgraded, and the waterproof performance of the entire machine will be improved.
In terms of release time, it is generally expected that Apple will officially release the new iPad mini in October. Apple has not yet announced relevant event arrangements, but market sources believe that the new products are expected to be unveiled before the end of this month.
If the final configuration is consistent with current rumors, then the biggest upgrade focus of the new generation iPad mini will focus on the OLED display technology itself. Users will get better color performance, contrast and black display effects, but the high refresh rate experience may still have to wait for future product updates.
