Abstract:
Samsung is working on fixing a long-criticized problem with the Exynos platform. As the development of the next-generation Galaxy S27 series advances, Samsung's new-generation Exynos baseband chip has made significant improvements in power consumption performance. Future Galaxy flagship models equipped with Exynos processors are expected to equal or even approach the version using Qualcomm's Snapdragon solution in terms of battery life performance.

According to Korean media citing industry chain sources, the M2700 baseband developed by Samsung’s System LSI department has achieved higher energy efficiency. This baseband is expected to be used in some Galaxy S27 models together with the Exynos 2700 processor. An industry insider revealed that through multiple technical adjustments such as voltage optimization, the overall performance of the M2700 has reached or even exceeded the level of some competitors' products.
For a long time, Galaxy flagship phones using Exynos chips have often been criticized by users for their high standby power consumption. One of the important reasons is that the energy consumption of Samsung's self-developed baseband is often lower than that of the modem supporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform. Therefore, there are often significant differences in the battery life performance of the same series of products in different markets.
It is worth noting that the M2700 is still manufactured using Samsung’s 4nm process, which is at the same process node as the Exynos Modem 5410 baseband used in the Exynos 2600 in the Galaxy S26 series. However, Samsung seems to have abandoned the past "Exynos Modem" naming system and will uniformly use M series models to name new generation baseband products in the future.
Although the process node has not changed, Samsung has improved energy efficiency levels through design optimization. At the same time, the new baseband has also optimized the chip area, and the overall area is reduced by about 4% compared with the previous generation, which helps to further improve power consumption, heat dissipation and internal space utilization.
In addition to energy efficiency improvements, the M2700 will also bring functional upgrades. The baseband support standard has been upgraded from 3GPP Release 17 to Release 18, which means it can support more 5G Advanced related features. In addition, its non-terrestrial network (NTN) capabilities have also been enhanced, which can further enhance the performance of satellite communication functions.
The report also revealed Samsung’s technology roadmap for the next few years. It is expected that the next-generation M2800 baseband for the Galaxy S28 series will shift to 2nm process manufacturing. On the one hand, Samsung’s move is to continue to reduce power consumption and improve performance, and on the other hand, it hopes to release more 4-nanometer production capacity.
Currently, Samsung is investing a large amount of 4nm production capacity in the production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) related products. As the artificial intelligence server market continues to grow, HBM business has become an important development direction of Samsung's semiconductor department. Samsung currently uses a 4-nanometer process to manufacture the basic logic chips used at the bottom of the HBM stack, so releasing more 4-nanometer production line resources is of great commercial significance.
At the same time, Samsung’s System LSI department is also actively promoting the adoption of more self-developed technologies in Galaxy flagship products. According to sources, Samsung is still discussing internally whether the Galaxy S27 Ultra will be equipped with the Exynos 2700 processor. However, judging from the current situation, the possibility of the Exynos solution re-entering more Galaxy flagship models is increasing.
If the M2700 can indeed solve the standby power consumption problems of past generations of products, then the chances of Samsung's self-developed processors regaining consumer recognition will also significantly increase. For Galaxy users who have been paying attention to the differences between Exynos and Snapdragon, the Galaxy S27 series may become an important node to observe whether Samsung can turn around.
