Abstract:
Valve is still working on how and when Steam Deck 2 should be launched, and no specific time has been announced yet. Designer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the company is determining the right way and timing to implement this new generation of handheld consoles.
Valve has previously made it clear that Steam Deck 2 will be launched, but it will need to wait until the right chip appears. The product idea of the original Steam Deck was to strike a balance between price, performance and battery life. The company was not prepared to significantly sacrifice energy efficiency and battery life in order to improve performance.
When talking about follow-up products in 2023, Griffais said that the team hopes to see a real "leap" in performance rather than upgrades at the expense of a significant increase in power consumption. He also mentioned at the time that it might take several years to achieve this leap.
Earlier this year, Griffais confirmed that the team was working on the next generation of Steam Deck gaming consoles, but did not reveal when the product might debut. With the 2026 hardware lineup consisting of Steam Controller, Steam Machine and Steam Frame being launched, the timing of Steam Deck 2 is once again in the spotlight.
Faced with the question of whether the current hardware supply shortage will affect the development considerations of Steam Deck 2, Griffais directly answered "it won't have much impact." However, this statement does not mean that the product has entered a clear release stage. Valve still needs to plan the development of the entire machine around the supply time of the target chip.
At this stage, Valve has not confirmed which chip Steam Deck 2 will use, nor has it announced the price or release window. Whether it can achieve significant improvements in performance, power consumption and battery life at the same time is still a key condition for the company to decide when to launch a new handheld console.
