Sugon previews the world's first 64-thread mobile workstation notebook

Abstract:

China's high-performance computing giant Sugon recently warmed up a groundbreaking mobile workstation product, which the official said is the world's first laptop with 64-thread computing capabilities. In the context that traditional PC chip giants Intel and AMD have yet to push the multi-threaded specifications of mobile platforms to this level, this move directly breaks the upper limit of the specifications of current mobile computing devices and triggers extensive discussions in the global hardware industry and technology circles.

Judging from the currently announced equipment parameters, this mobile workstation does not adopt a bulky pseudo-portable form like a "box desktop". Instead, it maintains the industrial design of a standard notebook computer. The body thickness is controlled at 16.9 mm, which is basically the same as mainstream thin and light high-end notebooks. In terms of core specifications, the machine is equipped with a high-performance domestic processor with 64 threads and an independent graphics card with 16GB of independent video memory. Official data released by Sugon shows that when the device locally deploys and runs a 35 billion parameter (35B) MoE architecture large language model, the inference generation speed can reach about 50 tokens per second. The overall AI inference performance is 3 to 5 times higher than that of mainstream products currently on the market. This rate is comparable to the response speed of some mainstream cloud API services.

Although the official architecture model of the processor has not yet been officially disclosed, industry analysts generally believe that the chip is most likely to come from Hygon, Sugon’s long-term strategic partner. At present, the industry speculates that there are two main technical implementation paths: one is to use the mature Haiguang C86 series x86 architecture processor to achieve a 32-core 64-thread configuration through dual-thread technology; the other possibility is based on Haiguang's latest C86-5G architecture. This self-developed micro-architecture introduces four-way simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT4), that is, a single physical core supports 4 threads, and only 16 physical cores are needed to achieve a 64-thread concurrency scale. No matter what solution is adopted, driving a 64-thread processor and a 16GB graphics memory independent display within the limited heat dissipation and power consumption envelope of mobile devices poses a severe test to the thermal design power consumption control of the entire machine.

Industry observers pointed out that the current global PC industry is accelerating towards the era of AI terminal-side deployment. How to run large models smoothly in local environments where the Internet is disconnected or where data privacy is important has become the core competition point of professional workstations. The 64-thread mobile workstation announced by Sugon not only demonstrates China’s latest attempt at mobile expansion of local x86 computing power, but also shows that it is establishing a unique product positioning in the fields of professional edge computing and portable local AI inference.

The specific power consumption release, battery life and official retail price of this device still need to be further announced by the official.
