Abstract:

Ukraine is continuing to use drones to attack large data centers in Russia. The latest attack is Yandex Cloud’s data center in Vladimir. This data center also hosts services for Yandex and many Russian companies. After the data center was attacked and failed, many Yandex services were interrupted.

Multiple Yandex services were disrupted due to data center attacks

Ukraine has previously used drones to attack the Yandex data centers in Sasovo and Kaluga, causing some service interruptions. The data center in Sasovo was severely damaged and has not been restored yet. The latest attack was the data center in Vladimir, which was also seriously damaged.

After the attack, many Yandex services such as search, maps, emails, taxis, payments, etc. experienced abnormalities. Yandex has not yet given a time for the full recovery of data center equipment and services. It is recommended that customers using the Yandex Cloud Vladimir Availability Zone migrate to other data center availability zones.

Yandex Pay payment service is greatly affected

The Vladimir data center provides services for Yandex Pay mobile payments. After the attack, some users were unable to check their balances, make payments or transfer funds. Yandex stated that the funds themselves are not stored in the data center, and that multiple copies of account records are kept in different locations. The company has verified the integrity of the records and no account records are lost, but the Yandex Pay service recovery time has not been determined.

The incident also demonstrates how physical damage to data centers can impact consumer applications and enterprise customers along cloud platforms and service dependencies. Yandex said its engineering teams are continuing to restore infrastructure while the company reminds customers to prepare for disaster recovery.
