US version of iPhone 18 Pro Max confirmed to be equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 baseband

Abstract:

As Apple’s new generation flagship mobile phone iPhone 18 series is officially launched globally, more details about the hardware configurations of models in different markets have also emerged.

According to official technical specifications and firmware code data, the flagship iPhone 18 Pro Max sold in the US market has become the only device in the series to use Qualcomm baseband chips, equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 5G baseband;

The US version of iPhone 18 Pro and all Pro and Pro Max models sold in other countries and regions around the world have been fully replaced with Apple’s self-developed C2 5G baseband chip.

This heterogeneous chip layout breaks the industry’s previous expectations for the popularity of Apple’s self-developed baseband replacement rhythm. Digging deeper into the system firmware code shows that the radio identifier inside the US version of iPhone 18 Pro Max is consistent with the previous generation iPhone 17 series, confirming that it is equipped with Qualcomm’s previous generation Snapdragon X80 baseband chip, not Qualcomm’s latest X85 solution. In contrast, Apple's self-developed C2 baseband, promoted in all other markets and models, not only improves energy efficiency by about 15% compared to the previous generation, but also introduces an artificial intelligence-based cellular network signal optimization mechanism and supports system-level precise location protection and other exclusive privacy functions.

Industry analysts pointed out that Apple chose to retain Qualcomm baseband only on the most high-end models of the US version. The most likely reason is to fulfill its contract commitments. According to the supplementary agreement reached by Apple and Qualcomm in 2023, Qualcomm will continue to provide Apple with 5G baseband chips until 2026. By strictly limiting the scope of use of Qualcomm baseband to a single top model in a single country market, Apple has not only fulfilled the terms of the existing commercial contract, but also switched the vast majority of its new shipments to the self-developed C2 architecture to the maximum extent, completing a key step in the replacement strategy of self-developed communication chips.

Although for the vast majority of ordinary users, the actual experience difference between Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 and Apple C2 baseband in daily network connection speed and signal stability is not obvious, this configuration difference still triggered heated discussions in the technology and consumer communities. With the delivery of the first batch of retail devices, independent evaluation agencies are expected to conduct rigorous same-network energy efficiency and network throughput comparison tests between the US version of iPhone 18 Pro Max and the international version equipped with C2 baseband in the next few weeks to verify the real power consumption and performance of the two baseband solutions in extreme network environments.
