Apple’s latest iPhone 18 Pro series has recently been found to have an important hardware difference that has not been disclosed before. According to Apple’s updated product technical specifications, the iPhone 18 Pro Max sold in the U.S. market has different cellular network baseband chip configurations from versions in other regions around the world, which means that the same flagship phone actually uses two different communication solutions in different regions.

The latest information shows that iPhone 18 Pro is equipped with Apple’s self-developed third-generation C2 cellular modem worldwide. On the iPhone 18 Pro Max, all regions except the US market also use the C2 baseband, but the US version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is an exception.
Further exposed information shows that there are relevant clues in Apple’s system code, indicating that the US version of iPhone 18 Pro Max does not use the C2 baseband, but the cellular modem provided by Qualcomm. Although Apple has not officially stated the specific model, the industry generally believes that the Qualcomm Snapdragon X85 platform is most likely to be used.
This discovery has attracted widespread attention in the industry, because in recent years Apple has been pushing to get rid of its dependence on Qualcomm baseband. Starting from the launch of the first-generation C1 baseband when the iPhone 16e was released in 2025, to the C1X used in the iPhone Air, and now to the new generation of C2, Apple has been gradually expanding the application scope of self-developed communication chips.
According to data released by Apple, compared with the previous generation of products, the C2 baseband not only supports the millimeter wave 5G network required by the US market, but also has faster upload speeds and further reduced energy consumption. Apple said that the new baseband has achieved significant improvements in upload performance and reduces power consumption by about 15% compared to C1X in terms of energy efficiency.
Therefore, it is particularly special that the US version of iPhone 18 Pro Max continues to use Qualcomm’s solution. Apple has not yet given an official explanation, and the outside world can only speculate based on existing information.
A more common view is that this may be related to the long-term supply agreement between Apple and Qualcomm. Qualcomm announced as early as 2023 that it would continue to supply smartphone basebands to Apple until 2026. Some analysts believe that Apple may retain Qualcomm's solution in the US version of iPhone 18 Pro Max to meet the minimum procurement requirements in the agreement between the two parties, while continuing to promote its self-developed baseband transition plan.
There is also a view that supply chain factors may also play a role. Since the iPhone 18 Pro, folding screen iPhone and most international iPhone 18 Pro Max already use C2 baseband, if Apple needs to meet a large amount of market demand in a short period of time, retaining the Qualcomm platform for the US version of Pro Max may help relieve production capacity pressure.
It is worth noting that Apple’s newly launched folding screen iPhone also uses C2 baseband globally. This shows that the development process of Apple’s self-developed baseband has not slowed down, and the US version of iPhone 18 Pro Max is more like a special arrangement than an overall strategic change.
At the same time, Apple’s new generation communications platform continues to expand. In addition to the C2 baseband, the iPhone 18 series is also equipped with Apple’s self-developed N1 wireless network chip to support functions such as Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread protocols. This means that Apple is gradually building a complete independent solution system from cellular communications to short-range wireless connections.
It is still unclear how big the performance difference between the US version of Qualcomm baseband and the global version of C2 baseband is in actual use. As new machines are launched, the actual measurement results in the future will become an important basis for observing the advantages and disadvantages of the two solutions. This discovery means that iPhone 18 Pro Max has become a rare product of the same model with different baseband configurations in recent years. For Apple, this also reflects that its transformation away from dependence on Qualcomm has entered the final stage, but before it is fully independent, there may still be transitional arrangements for certain markets and specific models to retain traditional solutions.
