According to technology website The Information, Apple unexpectedly announced the launch of new Mac mini and Mac last week Studio, due to unexpectedly strong demand for AI hardware from enterprise customers. Generally speaking, Apple launches new Macs in the fall, usually closer to October or November, so last week's announcement is particularly early and just before the debut of the new iPhone. The Information said that Mac Studio and Mac mini sales have increased significantly driven by AI demand, which is the reason behind Apple's early release.
New Mac mini and Mac Studio
Apple also specifically promoted the idea of connecting multiple Mac Studio to form a single, more powerful system for running large-scale cutting-edge AI models. This feature is mainly aimed at enterprise and developer customers, not ordinary consumers. In June of this year, Apple emphasized at an event called "Business at the Park" that Mac mini and Mac Studio are geared more towards enterprise customers. The event invited executives from major companies such as Ford, Disney and Anthropic to participate. It is said that Mac mini became the "darling" of the event.
Still, Apple has been surprised by the surge in overall demand for high-performance Mac desktops from enterprise customers. Apple doesn’t even have an engineering team dedicated to serving enterprise customers, nor does it have employees responsible for developer relations, and it lacks an enterprise-level AI strategy.
Some companies have taken the initiative to approach Apple, hoping to purchase the right to use its private cloud computing infrastructure, but were rejected by Apple. Instead, Apple is currently relying on partners such as WebAI and Mount Thor to provide AI tools and runtime environments built on Apple hardware.
Surge in enterprise demand for Mac hardware to run AI models has coincided with a global memory shortage, resulting in months-long out-of-stocks on multiple Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations. Since Apple's own high-end configurations are still difficult to buy, some enterprise customers are turning to other hardware, such as the compact AI desktop DGX Spark launched by Nvidia late last year, which has a similar appearance to the Mac mini.
