Well-known Apple reporter Mark Gurman recently said that Apple is likely to launch a new product called "iPhone Duo Max" in the next few years to further expand its newly launched foldable iPhone family. Gurman believes that one of the important reasons why Apple chose "Duo" as the naming suffix for the first foldable screen iPhone is to reserve space for more subsequent derivative models.
In the months before Apple released its first foldable screen phone, iPhone Duo, Gurman revealed that some employees within Apple began to use "iPhone Ultra" to refer to this device. It is generally believed that this name may be affected by media reports and rumors in the industry, which once triggered market speculation about the final name of the product.
However, Apple ultimately did not adopt the name "Ultra" and instead chose the "Duo" suffix consisting of only three letters. Gurman pointed out that this naming method is more coordinated with Apple’s existing product systems such as “Air” and “Pro” and is also more extensible. In contrast, the "Ultra" name has relatively limited room for expansion in subsequent product planning.
In the latest issue of the "Power On" newsletter, Gurman further predicted that Apple is expected to launch an "iPhone Duo Max" version with a larger screen size in the future. In addition, the company may also launch more derivative models for different consumer groups, such as the "iPhone Duo SE" with streamlined configuration and lower price, and the "iPhone Duo Mini" with a clamshell folding design.
Gulman is quite optimistic about Apple’s development prospects in the folding screen market. He said that with its deeply optimized software experience for folding form, high-quality hardware design, and durability performance that is superior to many similar products, iPhone Duo is expected to become one of the most influential folding screen phones on the market.
He even predicts that as Apple continues to improve this product category, iPhone Duo may eventually become the dominant product in the folding screen market and push folding screen mobile phones from the current relatively niche market segment to the mainstream. Gurman believes that the overall performance of this device is impressive enough, and it is expected that the folding screen form will become the new normal in the smartphone industry in the future.
