Recently, the gaming women’s rights organization WomeninGames issued a manifesto calling for equality and fairness in the gaming industry, the elimination of career barriers, and the elimination of gender discrimination. The group said they were inspired by the British suffragette movement and their manifesto included:
-Equal pay means equal pay for women for equal work.
-Women’s diverse life experiences and professional skills can bring more innovative ideas, develop better games, and create a richer and more dynamic creative culture.
-To achieve equity, barriers that prevent women from entering the gaming industry must be removed.
-Achieving gender equality and diversity in games and the gaming industry will lead to a sustainable future.
Marie-Claire Isaaman, CEO of Women in Games, said: "Women in the games industry are less likely to work in game development and programming, or to hold senior positions. Only a few studios are owned and run by women. The games industry faces serious challenges, including online trolling against girls and female gamers, sexual harassment in large companies, and discrimination in the workplace."
The organization said that women and girls still face harassment when playing games and online games. 72% of 1,500 respondents from the UK, the United States and other regions said they had been harassed by male players in games.
In addition, the organization also emphasized that according to the GDC "2022 Game Industry Status Report", in a survey of more than 2,700 people, the proportion of women in games is 20%. UKIE's 2022 industry consensus, drawn from more than 3,600 UK gaming professionals, shows women make up 30% of the industry.
