Google is making some big changes to its standalone payments app (Google Pay) in the US. In fact, the company announced that the app will be retired on June 4, 2024. Google said in a blog post that most of the most popular features of its payments app, such as setting up and managing users' payment services and tap-to-pay in retail stores that support the feature, will still be available through the Google Wallet app.

The Google Wallet app is used five times more than Google Pay in the U.S., the company said, so it appears Google is making these changes to eliminate an app that is no longer commonly used.

If you still use the Google Pay app to manage your payment services, you can transfer your fund balance to your designated bank account before June 4, and the Google Play website will continue to operate after June 4.

However, if you are still using the Google Pay app to send, receive, or request payments from others, those features will be removed from the app on June 4. Additionally, any offers or deals that previously appeared in the app are now available through the ShopDeals section in Google Search.

The company claims that it will still be making improvements to the experience of using Google Pay on the web for its Chrome browser's autofill feature. In addition, the company will expand the types of passes that can be stored in Google Wallet, including public transit cards.

Finally, this move to shut down the Google Pay application only applies to U.S. users of Google Pay. Google still supports its payments app in India and Singapore. and will "continue to be developed for the unique needs of these countries."
