Peter Beck, founder of New Zealand aerospace company Rocket Lab, recently announced that the company has signed a final agreement to acquire Iridium, a US-listed satellite communications service provider, for US$8 billion. This move marks the aerospace manufacturing and launch company's official expansion of its business territory into the field of satellite communication services, and further intensifies market competition in the global low-orbit satellite Internet field.
Under the agreement, Rocket Lab will fully receive Iridium’s satellite network resources and related frequency licenses. Analysts believe that acquiring spectrum resources will become a key support for Rocket Lab to build an autonomous satellite communication system. The person in charge of the company pointed out that compared with building a network independently, this acquisition will shorten the promotion cycle of related business by 10 to 20 years. At the same time, the company's existing launch vehicle launch capabilities will also significantly reduce the operating costs of future constellation upgrades and maintenance.
Market data shows that Rocket Lab achieved operating income of US$200 million in the first quarter of this year, a year-on-year increase of more than 60%, and its net loss narrowed to US$45 million from US$60 million in the same period last year. The company's current market valuation reaches US$40 billion. Although the company's stock price has fallen recently due to the correction in the industry's overall valuation, its stock price has still increased by nearly 600% since it was listed on Nasdaq in 2021.
