Samsung and Sony are the two giants in the world of smartphone camera sensors, and they equip not only their own phones with excellent sensors, but almost every other phone on the market. However, their strategies are slightly different. The Korean company mainly focuses on high-resolution sensors, while Sony focuses more on physically larger camera sensors, up to 1 inch.

However, a new report suggests that Samsung appears to be developing two ISOCELL camera sensors. These sensors are called ISOCELLHW1 and ISOCELLHW2, and if you look back at the naming, these will be brand new sensors.
Both sensors have a stunning resolution of 432 million pixels, but there are some differences. For example, the ISOCELLHW1's sensor is 1/1.05-inch with 0.56µm pixels, while the HW2's sensor is 1/1.07-inch with 0.5µm pixels. Now, I know these sensors are not exactly 1 inch, but they are very close and therefore will be marketed as 1 inch sensors.
Unfortunately, the source doesn't provide any information on phones using these Samsung sensors. The news said that Galaxy Z Fold6 will use the same sensor as Galaxy Z Flip5. On the other hand, Galaxy Z Fold7 will use a 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP5 camera with a sensor size of 1/1.3 inches and a pixel size of 0.5µm.
It's great to see Samsung finally stepping up and releasing a larger sensor. Coupled with high pixels, higher image quality is obviously not far away from us.
