Valve has introduced new security measures for developers to combat cyber attacks surrounding malicious actors and hackers taking over Steam developer accounts in order to add malware to game programs. As part of new security measures, developers will now need to confirm their identity to Valve via text message when deploying new versions of their games.
News of the new security measures was revealed by Simon Carless of the GameDiscoverCo newsletter. Carless posted a screenshot of a message from Valve saying it had alerted developers whose accounts had been hacked.
Valve detailed its new security measures in a blog post detailing the new SMS verification, making it clear that developers will only need to verify their identity when pushing a version to the default branch, and when the game is released.
The blog post further explains the various tools developers can use to deploy builds, such as steamcmd and SetAppBuildLive, and how developers will authenticate themselves through these tools.
