Crucial's MX500 series SATASSD has reportedly been discontinued after nearly seven years on the market. MX500 can be said to be the most popular SATA 6Gbps solid state drive series, available in 2.5-inch and M.2-SATA specifications. Due to its extremely low price per GB and reasonable performance levels, the drive continued into the 2020s as an ideal storage solution for client PCs.
With the advent of cheap QLCNAND NVMe SSDs, the increase in the number of NVMe slots on today's motherboards, and the decrease in SATA ports, the market is changing, which means it's time for Crucial to retire the MX500.
The MX500 is still in stock at retailers in capacities up to 4TB, but is priced similarly to QLCNAND-based NVMe 3rd or 4th generation drives such as Crucial's own P3Plus.
In fact, the 4TB variant of the P3PlusGen4NVMeSSD is priced lower than the 4TBMX500 but offers significantly higher performance.
