Analyst Jeff Pu said yesterday that Apple's first two foldable devices will be put into mass production in the second half of 2026. Today, he provided more details about the devices, which are expected to launch in 2026 or 2027.
In a research report from investment firm Hong Kong GF Securities, Jeff Pu said the two devices will include a foldable iPhone with a 7.8-inch internal screen, and a larger foldable device with an 18.8-inch display. He described the larger foldable device as a MacBook-iPad hybrid and suggested the device might run macOS rather than iPadOS.
This is a pretty bold prediction, as it suggests the 18.8-inch foldable device might end up being a touchscreen Mac. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said in a weekend PowerOn briefing that Apple's rumored design changes for iOS 19 and macOS 16 will lay the foundation for new hardware designs, including "foldable devices and touchscreen Macs." However, there aren't any rumors suggesting a touchscreen Mac will launch next year, so take it with a pinch of salt for now.
Pu cited a recent Wall Street Journal report as the basis for some of his foldable information, so his macOS predictions may simply be based on that report that the 18.8-inch device is "intended to be used as a laptop."
