Earlier this month, Apple updated its website to describe, disclosed how it collects and uses images for Apple Maps’ LookAround feature, which is similar to Google Maps’ Street View.

A newly added text in the introduction shows that starting in March 2025, Apple will use the images and data collected during the LookAround investigation to "train models that support Apple products and services, including models related to image recognition, creation, and enhancement."

Apple uses vehicles and backpacks (for pedestrian-only areas) equipped with cameras, sensors and other devices, including iPhones and iPads, to collect images and 3D data to enhance and improve Apple Maps.

The company said that as part of its privacy commitment, any captured images it publishes in the "LookAround" feature will blur faces and license plates. Apple also said it would only use these images with blurred details to train the model. It does accept requests from those who wish to blur the house as well, but does not do so by default.

AppleIntelligence has several features powered by AI image generation models. These include ImagePlayground, a cleanup tool in Apple's Photos app that removes parts of an image, and advanced image recognition that improves search capabilities in the Photos app.
