According to multiple reports, Meta Corporation plans to launch a new artificial intelligence research laboratory dedicated to "superintelligence" to participate in the artificial intelligence race.According to the New York Times, Meta has invited Scale AI founder and CEO Alexandr Wang to join the new lab.

Meta is in talks to invest billions of dollars in Scale AI as part of a deal that would bring Scale AI employees to Meta. Meta has also been poaching lead researchers from OpenAI and Google, according to the New York Times.

The new lab comes amid growing frustration among Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the company's shortcomings in artificial intelligence. According to Bloomberg, Zuckerberg has been meeting with AI researchers and engineers at his homes in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto, personally recruiting a team of about 50 people, including a new director of AI research.

Sources told Bloomberg that Zuckerberg believes Meta can and should leapfrog other tech companies working on AGI. AGI is an as-yet-undefined concept whereby artificial intelligence systems can surpass human performance in many tasks.

Meta AI hit 1 billion monthly active users last month.
