According to data from the Federation of Passenger Transport Associations,China's automobile import volume from January to June 2025 was 220,000 units, a significant year-on-year decrease of 32%, which is a rare and significant decline in the first half of the year. Among them, 43,000 units of imported cars were imported in June, down 30% year-on-year and 9% month-on-month. The pressure on the imported car market to continue to shrink has been highlighted.

From the perspective of import source countries, the major importing countries have shown a downward trend.

From January to June, Japan ranked first with imports of 82,073 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 17%; Germany imported 49,717 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 43%; the United States imported 28,007 vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 48%.

However, Slovakia performed outstandingly, importing 30,248 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 10%, becoming one of the few countries to achieve growth.

In terms of vehicle model structure, fuel passenger cars are still the main import force, but the performance of imported new energy vehicles is weak. From January to June 2025, the proportion of imported new energy vehicles will drop to 2%. Imports of pure electric passenger vehicles will drop by 80% year-on-year, and plug-in hybrid models will drop by 62%.

Among passenger cars, large-displacement models have declined significantly, and the import volume of models with a displacement greater than 4L has dropped by 77% year-on-year, reflecting the continued shrinking of domestic market demand for large-displacement imported cars.

The continued decline of the imported car market is closely related to the continuous growth of China's automobile industry and its electrification transformation.

The competitiveness of domestically produced vehicles has improved, and the localization of international brands has accelerated, changing the market demand structure. The demand for fuel vehicles continues to shrink, and imported fuel vehicles have also been affected.
