Google is integrating artificial intelligence language learning tools into its translation app. This new feature, currently in beta, allows you to create customized language courses based on your skill level and your purpose of learning a new language (such as a holiday abroad).

Currently, Google Translate can only help English speakers practice Spanish and French, and it can also help Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers practice English. Click on the brand new Google Translate app"practise"button you can select your skill level and describe your goals. You can also choose from preset scenarios such as using the language for professional conversations, daily interactions, talking to friends and family, and more.
Google then uses its Gemini AI model to generate lessons based on your answers. If you tell Google that you have intermediate Spanish and would like to communicate with your host family while studying abroad, Google Translate may create a recommended scenario to help you understand meal times. Afterwards, you can practice talking about the topic using Google Translate, or listen to the conversation and tap on words you recognize.
"These exercises will track your daily progress and help you develop the skills you need to confidently communicate in another language," Google product manager Matt Sheets said in a press release. The setup sounds somewhat similar to Duolingo, which also customizes lesson plans based on your skill level and goals.
Additionally, Google has launched a real-time translation feature in its Translate app, allowing you to have real-time conversations with others even if you don't speak the same language. The feature translates your speech into the speaker's preferred language and vice versa by creating an AI-generated transcription and audio translation. Unlike Live Translate on the Google Pixel 10, the Google Translate app doesn't try to make the AI-generated audio sound like your voice, but Sheets told reporters the company is "trying different options."
Real-time translation is currently available for users in the United States, India, and Mexico, and supports more than 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil.
