Anthropic recently announced that it has added a free memory function and a cross-platform memory import tool to its large model service Claude, targeting users of competing products such as ChatGPT and Gemini. The new tool is open to free users from now on and supports the overall migration of conversation "memory" and personality preferences in other AI services to Claude, lowering the threshold for users to switch platforms.

The official provides a prompt word specifically for "exporting memories". Users can paste this prompt in services such as ChatGPT, and let the other party list all the "memories" stored for the user and the personal background and preferences summarized from past conversations, and output them in a format that is easy for Claude to parse. The user then only needs to copy this entire paragraph into the memory input box in Claude's settings page, and the system will automatically write the information into Claude's long-term memory.

Claude's memory capabilities were previously only available to paying subscribers starting in October 2025. Now with the memory function and import tools being moved to the free tier, users no longer need to pay extra to migrate their preferences and instructions. Anthropic says the memory feature will continue to exist as part of the free plan, and users can turn it on and perform the import process in Claude's "Memory" settings.

Prior to this, Anthropic had taken the opportunity to benchmark ChatGPT’s product strategy many times. Last month, after ChatGPT announced that it would launch ads for free users, Anthropic made a high-profile commitment to keeping Claude ad-free, and simultaneously opened to free users many features such as compaction, file creation, external connectors and skills that were originally only available to paying users. With the addition of memory and import tools, the feature set of the free version of Claude is further enhanced and its appeal significantly increased.

Currently, Claude has jumped to the top of the Apple App Store free list, a position that has long been occupied by ChatGPT. At the same time, Anthropic has been in the news due to its recent failure to reach a consensus with the US government on the use of AI. It was included in the supply chain risk list by the US, but this has not stopped it from stepping up its offensive in the consumer AI market.
