According to news on the evening of December 20, the "Yang Yuanqing Alumni Donation Ceremony for the University of Science and Technology of China" was held at the University of Science and Technology of China (hereinafter referred to as "the University of Science and Technology of China"). Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO of Lenovo Group, announced that he will donate 200 million yuan in his own name to his alma mater, the University of Science and Technology of China, to support the construction of the junior class building of the University of Science and Technology of China and to help his alma mater's basic scientific research innovation and talent cultivation.
Yang Yuanqing said that thanks to the cultivation of his alma mater, he had the opportunity to realize his youth ambition of promoting the popularization of "computing power" and was full of gratitude to his alma mater. "HKUST not only carries my love for my hometown in Anhui, but is also my spiritual homeland. HKUST is like the source of rivers and the roots of grass and trees, which fills me with gratitude and attachment." Yang Yuanqing said in his speech at the donation ceremony.
Yang Yuanqing said that he always hopes to give back to his alma mater and make more contributions to his alma mater. This year is the 65th anniversary of the University of Science and Technology. I noticed that my alma mater has been raising funds to build a new building for the Junior College. This is a far-reaching "century-old plan" and I am bound to support it.
Yang Yuanqing also mentioned in his speech that the Youth Class is a business card of HKUST education. The original intention of its establishment is to select and focus on cultivating a group of elite teams for basic scientific research and innovation. Basic research is the foundation of the national science and technology innovation building, and breakthroughs in basic research fundamentally rely on high-level talents. Over the past 40 years since its establishment, the Junior Class of HKUST has trained a large number of top scientists, academicians of the two academies and industry leaders, becoming the cradle of scientific and technological talents and making important contributions to the development of science and technology in China.
The wisdom of young people will make the country wise, and the strength of young people will make the country strong. Yang Yuanqing expressed the hope that after the new building supported by his donation is put into use, the students will enjoy a first-class learning and scientific research environment and help them achieve outstanding results; he also hopes that they can have high aspirations, devote themselves to scientific research in school, and strive to become national leaders. Talents who are the pillars of our family will contribute to the development of human science and technology; we also hope that after graduating from HKUST, generations of future generations of HKUST students, no matter how far they go or how great their achievements, will be able to think of their origins and take action whenever they think of their youthful years spent in this building, and they can also contribute to their alma mater. “It would be my greatest honor if I could inspire more alumni to pass on the culture of giving back to my alma mater,” Yang Yuanqing said.
Bao Xinhe, President of the University of Science and Technology of China, said, "This donation is not only a huge support for the University of Science and Technology of China, but also a deep affection for the younger generation of the motherland. The Junior College will definitely live up to expectations and continue its glorious history since its establishment in 1978. It will continue to become an important base for the country to cultivate high-level scientific and technological talents, and will continuously cultivate outstanding scientists, entrepreneurs and leaders in all walks of life for the country."
Shu Gequn, Secretary of the Party Committee of USTC, signed a donation agreement with Yang Yuanqing on behalf of the Alumni Foundation, and Bao Xinhe, President of USTC, on behalf of the school.
