OpenAI announced several important updates to its AI programming agent Codex, focusing on enhancing automation, image generation, and personalized memory capabilities on the Mac platform. Codex can now directly control desktop Mac applications through its own cursor, allowing you to "see" screen content and complete clicks, inputs, and more to perform various tasks.

After the update, Codex can run multiple agent instances in parallel on the same Mac without disrupting users' daily use. OpenAI stated that this capability will help developers with application testing, front-end interface iteration, etc. Codex has also added a stronger memory function that can remember each user's preferences, common workflows, technology stacks and other information, making it more suitable for personal daily development processes.
In terms of automation, Codex can now resume work after an interruption based on existing conversation threads, and can schedule itself for future work tasks to continue progressing on the same project over the span of days or even weeks. It also proactively suggests actionable work based on project context, memory content, and connected plug-ins.
The update also introduces a built-in browser to Codex, allowing users to annotate directly on web pages to provide more precise instructions to agents. In the future, Codex will also gain complete control over the browser, including opening websites, manipulating pages through user flows, taking screenshots, and inspecting output results.
In terms of generative capabilities, Codex has been upgraded to use the gpt-image-1.5 model to generate images within the application. OpenAI says this will help quickly create visual assets for product concepts and interface prototypes. At the same time, Codex now supports multiple terminal tabs, can handle GitHub code review comments, and can open files directly in the sidebar, providing rich previews for PDFs, spreadsheets and other documents.
In conjunction with these feature updates, Codex has also added more than 90 new plug-ins for combining multiple skills, application integrations, and MCP servers to improve its ability to obtain contextual information and actually operate.
OpenAI said these updates will be rolled out to Codex desktop users who log in with ChatGPT accounts from now on. However, personalization-related features are not yet available to Enterprise, Education, and EU and UK users, and are expected to be launched at a later time. At the same time, the computer control function is temporarily unavailable in the European Union and the United Kingdom.
