After Apple disrupted the entry-level notebook market with its $599 MacBook Neo, further impacting the PC industry that was already under pressure from parts shortages and rising memory prices, Qualcomm and Microsoft began to "fight back." Qualcomm officially released the new Snapdragon C processor, which focuses on "reinventing entry-level laptops" and aims to lower the price of Windows on ARM laptops to about $300.
Qualcomm said the Snapdragon C platform emphasizes quiet and cool operation while providing all-day battery life and "responsive" performance. The new platform has a built-in neural processing unit (NPU) that can run some AI functions on the local device. However, since the Snapdragon C platform does not meet the requirements of Microsoft Copilot+ PC in terms of NPU capabilities, users who want to use more complete local AI functions such as Recall still need to choose models equipped with the Snapdragon X series or the latest processors from Intel and AMD.
In terms of architecture, Snapdragon C uses Qualcomm's Kryo CPU core, which has long been used on mobile processors, which is different from the Oryon core used on the PC-class Snapdragon X series. This also highlights the positioning of Snapdragon C to a certain extent - it prefers mobile platform technology to be transferred to entry-level computers, rather than directly competing with high-end ARM PC platforms.
The first laptops powered by Snapdragon C are expected to hit the market later this year, from OEMs including Acer, HP, Lenovo and more. The specific configuration and price have not yet been fully disclosed, but Acer has announced a new model using this platform, the Aspire Go 15. Official information shows that this product will be equipped with a Snapdragon C processor, up to 8GB of memory, up to 512GB of storage, and a 53Wh battery capacity.
Compared with the MacBook Neo, which Qualcomm and PC manufacturers strive to "match", the body material of this Aspire Go 15 adopts an all-plastic design. Judging from the wording of the press release, the industry may see laptops with 4GB of memory in this price range again, which is relatively rare in today's mainstream Windows devices. Acer has not announced the specific price of the model, but Qualcomm emphasized in its official description that the Snapdragon C is designed for computers in the "price range of $300 and above."
