A new rumor from South Korea claims that this year’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models will offer a new 2TB maximum storage option. According to the news aggregation account "yeux1122" on the Naver blog, the maximum storage capacity of iPhone16Pro and iPhone16ProMax will be double that of the iPhone15Pro model.
The move is said to be due to recent rumors that Apple will switch to higher-density quad-level cell (QLC) NAND flash memory on higher storage models. Apple's use of QLCNAND can pack more storage into a smaller space, and it's less expensive than the triple-layer cell (TLC) NAND currently used in iPhones. But the disadvantage is that QLC's read and write speeds are relatively slow.
It's worth noting that over the past few years we've seen rumors that both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro would feature 2TB options for the same reason, but those rumors have proven to be false.
Despite this, Apple is expected to add a "capture button" for shooting video to the iPhone 16 models this year. The Information reports that the button is being introduced to further promote the iPhone as a camera replacement for shooting horizontal videos, so offering higher storage options may be part of that plan.
